Radio is a wonderful medium. It can be powerful and at the same time intimate. It can affect your own sense of the world and of yourself.
I am extremely fortunate to be able to work within an industry that I love.
My current role is Regional Content Director for Local Radio Victoria / Australian Broadcasting Commission.
I have worked my way up a rickety broadcast ladder. What started as a regular spot on Dubai FM and an inkling that I might actually be good at it, grew into a position as a producer for an English speaking morning/ current affair program with Spain’s national broadcaster ‘Onda Cero’ and then becoming presenter of that same program. From there I was headhunted by Maurice Boland to present breakfast on southern Spain’s leading commercial talk station at the time ‘REM FM’. My co presenter was the incorrigible but well loved Barry Mitchell.
While presenting the breakfast program and enjoying the Andalusian lifestyle I began to notice a niche in the very competitive commercial radio market in Southern Spain and developed a new music radio station with a unique ‘bi-lingual’ concept. The idea was to target 15 – 35 yr old expats wanting to learn a little Spanish and Spaniards wanting to brush up on their English. Hot FM Marbella was born.
It was also at this time that I developed my dedicated food program The Main Ingredient and syndicated to a number of commercial stations
For me Australia has and always will be home. After 14 years living and working abroad It was time to return to Oz. In Spain I had been truly bitten by the radio bug and wanted to stay in radio, so I applied for and landed a position as Regional Content Manager for ABC Local Radio South West WA.
The world of the Australian Broadcasting Commission was a big learning curve after commercial radio in Europe. Even bigger was the culture shock going from Southern Spain to Southern Western Australia. However, I’m very glad I did! I managed the station and the talented team of broadcasters, content makers, and journalists in it. I learned what a responsibility being the ‘Emergency Broadcaster’ is (My first bushfire was about 3 days into the job) and I learned what an incredible privilege it is to be able to broadcast to a region that was an urban/country mix of amazing and wonderful people.
ABC Local Radio also picked up my program The Main Ingredient and it aired statewide across Western Australia and on ABC720 Perth. The program picked up the ‘Worlds Best Food & Wine Radio’ award at the World Food Media Awards 2010/2011. The Main Ingredient now airs nationally on ABC Digital Radio.
After 3 years in regional WA the opportunity to live and work (and eat) in Melbourne was just too good to pass up and I moved to Victoria to take up the role of Content Director for Regional Victoria.
These are now my much loved babies:
